We love what we do so much that we forget to communicate it all some times. We’ll continue to develop how we’re sharing the TCTC story to increase both its accessibility and accountability. For now we’ll update information and story monthly, both for donation totals and our supported partners.

And if you’re wondering what it’s all about…since day dot, the desire was to build a business that invested back into the depths of the coffee industry. The Cup That Counts was born as a pillar of Commonfolk Coffee Company in 2013, where 20c of each and every cup sold could be reinvested into contributing to building a coffee industry that is fair for everyone involved. This initiative has grown with Commonfolk, taken its own course to raise extra funds and become a conduit for sustained partnerships with amazing communities, here and far. As of Jan 1st 2021, a total of $196,963.82 has been raised!

We’re almost as proud of TCTC as we are the folks it’s allowed us to call friends and partners. Two of the core are the Zukuka Bora and Home Ground teams. While there’s far too many layers to their work and contexts to sum in a few words, we’ll endeavour to share snippets best we can and invite you to engage with them yourselves.

While TCTC receives donations each month, our direct contributions to supported partners are often planned for different times of the year. We’ll share the financial incomings and outgoings each month, including the destination.

DECEMBER 2020.

December’s financial contributions to supported partners was an epic one. We’re talking $21,110.26.

We’re bloody grateful for a lot of things. One is the government assistance which kept the doors open and team employed across 2020. Another is the most important facet of Commonfolk - our people, our customers, choosing to drink proper good coffee. Because of you, we were able to meet the first of our philanthropic financial commitment to Zukuka Bora for this financial year’s co-funded projects! We transferred AU$20,000 in Christmas week.

Stay classy while we prepare some fresh updates about Zukuka Bora and Home Ground. They both have a bunch of exciting projects and developments. For Zukuka Bora, the major project for this year was to build a coffee drying greenhouse, to increase production capacity and improve overall quality. And it’s complete! A couple of photos below…it’s very legit. The biggest of its kind in East Uganda. The team are excited for the immediate improvements in drying quality and subsequent cup quality - which we were able to taste in early ‘table’ samples. This is directly a result of funding from Entrust and Commonfolk.

It’s been a big ol’ vibe to be hosting folks in our space again post lockdown. Brewing more cups of coffee for humans means more monies straight into TCTC account. Two things we love!

Extra fundraising activities included the fresh espresso blend “The Buzz That Counts”, an inaugural Movember collab with the Barbershop and Co. While the other delicious dough raiser was the olliebollen (Dutch donuts) whipped up at the roastery on Christmas eve.
