Follow the line of people down Mount Eliza Way, and you’ll likely end up at Bütterken Bakery. This German-style bakery churns out sourdough baked goods and Commonfolk coffee to hoards of locals collecting their daily bread.

Inside, freestanding racks are stacked with artisan loaves including their signature Bütterken Sourdough, Schwarzbrot, and German Rye. Piles of pretzels are hand-rolled daily and fermented overnight. These babies are baked to perfection and sprinkled with sea salt, you can try one plain, buttered or slathered in cream cheese and chives.

The peninsula also has one of the highest levels of youth unemployment in Australia. HomeGround is a social enterprise aiming to bridge the gap between unemployed youth and vacant hospitality jobs. HomeGround provides vocational training for unskilled youth by partnering with companies like Commonfolk. That Spirited Lot Distillers began as a wild idea between brothers Jon-Paul (JP) and Chris Willigenburg in 2016. It was a lifelong dream of theirs to work together on a project that captured their love for tastes and flavours and distilling offered a perfect new adventure. Along the way, sisters Sarah and Kate Barton also joined the boys on their crazy ride. The idea rapidly gained momentum and on Christmas Eve of 2018 a 200L copper still named Doris (after the brothers’ late grandmother) arrived in their little warehouse in Seaford. A core focus in their method is maintaining an environmentally sustainable production and waste management .
