Do Good. Drink Coffee.

On 11th June 2021 Commonfolk partnered with A Good Little Thing, Bussy McBussface, Flock, Mad Ram, Merchant & Maker, Miss Moose, Mylk Bar, Phase Two, The Corner Pantry, Two To Tango and Zarb & Ru to donate $1 from every coffee sold on the day. These funds were sent to Zukuka Bora to purchase a coffee farm in Sipi Falls - which cemented their continued support and investment in the Sipi coffee farming community.

The ability for Zukuka Bora to have an official head quarters in one of their major buying regions has been instrumental in their ability to improve coffee quality and purchase larger volumes from local farmers. The land was purchased from a respected elder and coffee farmer named Sipiria (prounouced Sip-ee-ree-ah) who had been a longtime supporter of Zukuka’s work in the community. Him and his family have been instrumental in welcoming specialty coffee back into his community.

Not only does the farm produce it’s own wonderful coffee, it will also serve as a demonstration of what a well-maintained coffee garden can look like and yield, and as a very special single-farm microlot – something very, very rare in Mt Elgon where almost all coffee is grown on small-holder land. Zukuka Bora have had plenty of interaction with their farmers throughout the year at their new home. Kenneth, Zukuka’s Sipi Falls manager, has been using the site to explore experimental processing, and it’s high elevation and cool climate make it ideal for some unique trials. The results have been fascinating and we have 2 bags of ‘Sipiria Ultra Rare’ micro lot’s arriving in country very soon. The farm will also host a tree nursery from where Zukuka can distribute hundreds of thousands of wonderful shade trees to our farmers, which help improve the coffee, but more importantly protect the incredible, but fragile, ecosystem on which so, so many people depend.

Good Coffee Day 2022 will fundraise to build a washing station and drying facility in Sipi Falls.

We’ve been working with Zukuka Bora to identify areas where investment is needed as they approach the 2022 harvest. In particular they highlighted the need for a washing station and drying facility on the new land at Sipi Falls. This investment would further demonstrate their commitment to the Sipi community, and greatly scale up the sites capacity, as well as improving the quality of processing. We’re aiming to raise over $5,000 which will enable the full build of the processing station.

You can help buy heading to a participating venue on Saturday 18th June and buying a coffee to support GOOD COFFEE DAY and the Zukuka Bora team. We’re aiming to raise 5K to fund the entire build of the processing station on the Sipi Falls site. Otherwise donate what you can via our online donation portal.
