Do you ever question your life? Do you ever wonder why? Do you ever see in your dreams, all the castles in the sky? Early 2000s Belgian trance aside; what better castle in the sky is there than Machu Picchu itself. Hayao Miyazaki may disagree. In southern Peru, along the highlands of la Convención de Cusco, but a hop skip and jump away from this coffee’s namesake. Caravela has worked with the five producers that combine to make this lot since 2019, with year on year improvement from The Coffee Farmer Education Program (PECA), their “boots on the ground”. PECA helps not just improve quality, but sustainability both in climate and business. So much so that they now work with ten producers in the area. The rainy seasons, micro climates and loam soil along the Peruvian Andes make for exceptional coffee. Not to mention the 1800 MASL which brings on the ever elusive acidic qualities we’ve come to love from Peruvian coffee. With Laputa - sorry, I meant Machu Picchu - looking out over the farms and families, and Caravela’s PECA team helping and educating these smallholders, here’s hoping this sadly rare tradition of farming amongst the younger generations can keep going.
