Nzaini is the sibling to the Uvuu coffee you already know, part of the same Kikima Cooperative and pushing to get the Makueni County recognised as a serious region for excellent Kenyan coffee. Careful sorting, fermentation and slow drying give this lot its classic Kenyan clarity, with flavours of blackcurrant, cherry and caramel white chocolate. We love this coffee and have enjoyed it as part of our Big Picture seasonal. Now it is getting the spotlight and a chance to tell you a little more about what is going on in Kenya. The island of Lamu is located on the north east coast of Kenya and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the best preserved example of Swahili culture in the world and is a time capsule of how Africa was a big part of the world trading in the 19th century. Now Lamu’s youth is facing colonial tourism with outsiders purchasing land and turning Lamu into the African Bali. This leaves the Lamu born community with limited options for career, usually tourism based labour or fishing, which is under threat from giant trawling operations. Our sourcing partner Vava Angwenyi, who is the founder of the B Corp-certified Vava Coffee and the mother of a Lamu heritage child, has created La Dulce Toro Café in Lamu to provide an alternative career path for young people on the island. Vava’s café is both a training ground and a gathering place, opening new doors for youth to explore careers in coffee and hospitality. Kenyan owned businesses like this who are championing Swahili culture and its young people are powerful and things we choose to support. The Cup That Counts has been able to help La Dulce Toro Café with some financial support to date and that is possible when customers like you buy good coffee that does good things.

Did you know 20c from every kilogram of coffee roasted and every cup sold goes to The Cup That Counts.
