To see and understand voice

Nganga Ngulu (Ng-gar-na Na-goo-loo)

For the month of July, Commonfolk's signature blend, traditionally known as Godfather, will be renamed Nganga Ngulu, meaning "to see and understand voice" in Bunurong language. Nganga Ngulu is also the name of the aged care services at First Peoples' Health and Wellbeing, and the name has been chosen to honour the voices, wisdom and enduring strength of our Elders. In place of Godfather, a name synonymous with leadership and respect, Nganga Ngulu provides an opportunity to celebrate the knowledge, stories and guidance of the generations who continue to shape and strengthen our communities.

A note from the artist:

My name is Kayleine, and I am a proud Yorta Yorta woman living and working on Bunurong Country. I have been working in hospitaity for the past five years, and through that journey I discovered my love for making coffee.

Working at Blak Fig has given me the opportunity to continue building my skills in a space that celebrates culture, community and connection. For this collaboration, I created artwork incorporating symbols representing connection, water, journey and gathering place, alongside cross-hatching that reflects my Yorta Yorta heritage. At the centre of the design is the Blak Fig coffee caravan, representing a place where people come together to connect, share stories and build community.

I am incredibly proud of this project, as it has been my first opportunity to share and practise my art in this way. Inspired by this year's NAIDOC Week theme, "50 Years of Deadly," the collaboration celebrates the strength, creativity and cultural pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of telling our stories in our own way, on our own terms.

For the month of July, 20c of every kilogram roasted by Commonfolk, will be donated to Blak Fig, helping to support the development and delivery of their hospitality traineeship program for local mob.

Did you know 20c from every kilogram of coffee roasted and every cup sold goes to The Cup That Counts.
