Nyeri is a classic washed coffee from Kenya, it brings us back to those fledgling third wave years of specialty coffee, turning heads “What did you put in this?”. With amazing tea notes and Blackcurrent juice.
This lot piggy backed on the import of our true partnership with Vava Coffee, but still as impactful. Processed at Kieni Factory servicing nearly 1000 small holders over a third of which are women. Many producers in the area are suffering from low yield, the overarching cooperative, Mugaga, helps these farmers with common issues, such as leaf rust and pests. Allowing these smallholders to have the resources to better their own farms. Mugaga also has multiple programs to empower youth and women to have a livelihood within coffee.
All cherry is selectively handpicked by farmers and delivered to Kieni, where it is then hand sorted once more to remove any damaged or over/under ripe cherry. Only the best of the best makes it into the next stage. Pulped using a disc pulper and is then fermented for 16 to 24 hours before being washed. Parchment at Kieni is then soaked in soaking tanks for around 24 hours, finally being dried on raised beds.
