In 2023, Zukuka Bora had a vision. With their feet on the ground, heads in the sky, they knew in order to best serve their partner farmers in Bududa they needed land to call their own and base their operations out of. An unremarkable little plot outside Bukulasi, a tiny little hamlet, became the home where they wanted to be.
I love the passage of time. Three years ago this was a place much like any other in rural Bududa, eastern Uganda, full of bananas and onions. Now flash forward to the year of our Lord 2026 and this is the place where tens of millions of shillings (thousands of dollars) are paid to farmers in exchange for tonnes of the finest coffee cherry eyes have been set upon. And in three years time if someone asks, this is where they’ll be, no flashes and no pans here. Zukuka Bora were able to purchase this land only with the support of the Cup that Counts (you buying coffee!) and now not just the local farmers can reap what they’ve sowed, as this blend contains only coffees that have passed through this hallowed ground.
We’ve wombo combo’d all the coffee we could from Bududa, with a community lot, also from Zukuka Bora to bring out the best we could showcase from Bududa. Think a raspberry spider (an ice cream float, not the creepy crawly). The kind of thing you haven’t had since you were a kid at the milkbar, but somehow remember exactly. A Home Away From Home, if you will, it's where I want to be.
All of this feels like cause for a celebration, like a party, or perhaps a wedding. If only we had a song.
Did you know 20c from every kilogram of coffee roasted and every cup sold goes to The Cup That Counts.
